The Box – Cameron Diaz and James Mardsen

Imagine a middle class couple who are overextended on their credit cards and not sure how they are going to continue to afford the lifestyle they love, but can't pay for.  This may describe you or some you know.  The Box is a story of such a couple who finds a box with a button on their doorstep.  Soon afterwards, a grossly disfigured man, Frank Langella, shows up and claims that all their money problems can be over. . . with the push of the button.

There is a catch.  The Box stars Cameron Diaz and James Mardsen as Norma and Arthur Lewis, who soon find themselves with a agonizing temptation that leads them down a path of no return.  The action, visuals, and dialogue, are quick and make you uncomfortable as you watch and listen to the unthinkable situation that the couple finds themselves in.  But even more uncomfortable may be the nagging question in the back of your head:  what would you do?

The Box is a strange, strange film, that is like no other I know of.  Based on the 1970s short story called "Button, Button" by Richard Matheson, the movie also takes place in the 70s which would explain the wallpaper.

Buy Toy Story DVD

Toy Story 3, the much anticipated release of the sequel to Toy Story and Toy Story 2, has many people looking to buy Toy Story on DVD. The big stores are running low on stock, with the release of Toy Story 3 on June 18, the best price and availability of the original Toy Story on DVD is on eBay.

The great Disney and Pixar family movie starring Tim Allen and Tom Hanks, asks the universal questions we all want to know:

"What do toys do when they're not played with?"

The first movie deals with what must be the hardest time of the year for toys, the annual birthday party, when their owner gets newer and better toys that may replace them. This year the newest toy is Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear played by Time Allen.

With Toy Story 2 we have one of those rare instances when a sequel may be better than the original. Most people do agree that it surpassed the original artistically as well as commercially.

Toy Story 1 and 2 are two of the greatest family movies of all time and if you don't own them yet, now is the time!

Check out the newer 2 Disc Special Editions available.  Also available in Blu-Ray and 3D.

Did You Hear About The Morgans? DVD

Did You Hear About the Morgans? was about as predictable as they come.  After seeing the trailer showing a married couple witnessing a murder that requires them to enter the witness protection program, I pretty much felt like I had seen the movie.  Well, I did spring for this at the local dollar theater, because I knew it would be funny, regardless.  It was.

Hugh Grant is funny in his normal understated way.  His wife and him are separated and he wants her back.  His wife seems to still love him, but is not sure she can live with him.  Entering the witness protection program and being sent to the middle-of-nowhere, Wyoming gives them time to try and patch things up.

Sam Elliot and Mary Steenburgen play the husband and wife team who protect the Morgans from the bad guys, the bears, and each other.  All in all, it was one of those movies that was not hysterical, but really had us smiling and laughing much of the time.  I don't think I will spoil things to tell you that there is a happy ending.

Did You Hear About the Morgans? is more a fish-out-of-water tale, than a murder mystery so don't get too worked up about the witness protection sub-plot. It was an interesting way to get the separated Morgans to spend a little time together . . .

Note to self: If I witness a murder, immediately dye my hair, lose 50 pounds, and start wearing tons of make-up.  The killer will never recognize me.

Gossip The Movie (2000) – James Marsden & Kate Hudson

GossipposterDoes an innocent rumor, started as a class project, have the potential to cause murder on a college campus?  Watch Gossip and you will never view a rumor as innocent or gossip as something to pass the time.

Three college students who are best friends and roommates decide to start and track a rumor and see how far it will go in short amount of time.  Is it possible that one of the three has an ulterior motive and is trying to even an old score?  Beautiful and rich, Beau and Naomi (Joshua Jackson and Kate Hudson) are chosen as the focus of the rumor, which sooon spins out of control.

The consequences are quite shocking, and very unexpected.  Some reviewers have painted this movie as another "pretty rich kids doing bad things to each other" film that were quite popular for a bit.

Gossip is so much more if you look.  For one thing, I don't like movies like this.  Usually no point, other than to show us young pretty actors portraying how shallow the young, rich and beautiful can be.  Gossip, on the other hand is all of us.  The neighbors, your coworkers, your sister, and even your friends from church.  The movie doesn't get too deep, but my thoughts did.  An ugly rumor, for whatever reason started, probably will not end well.

The movie takes this to the extreme, but the plot will keep you guessing until the end.  It does not wrap up nicely and has some truly unexpected moments.

Dear John – Channing Tatum DVD

DJ_IT_1Sht_18Dear John, starring Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum, is not a movie for everyone, but may just be a movie that has something for everyone.  Paying the most I have ever paid to see a movie in my life, I saw Dear John yesterday at Universal Citywalk Cinemas in Hollywood.  Yes, I may have preferred to wait for the DVD release, but this was a special occasion so we splurged.

We almost feel asleep.  Not because the movie was boring!  Just those wonderful captain chairs at Citywalk are more comfy than you can imagine.  The large popcorn and drinks had free refills, but who wanted to get up?  Really, if you are ever in the area, you must go.  But get there before 12:00 am for the best ticket prices and no lines.

The movie apparently is quite different than the book by Nicholas Sparks, so keep that in mind if you have already read it.  There are some major changes according to my daughter who read it before requesting to see the movie for her birthday.  True to all Nicholas Sparks tales that I have read or watched, there is a girl, there is a boy, and there is a reason they can't be together.

In Dear John, Savannah and John meet much be accident in adorable scene that finds Channing Tatum diving off a 25 foot pier to save her. . . purse.  Their relationship starts slow, but love grows fast, and is interrupted when John, who is only surfing at Savannah's beach on leave from a special forces unit of the military, must return to duty.

This starts a series of letters between the two, that connect them around the world, even though John cannot reveal where he is stationed from one moment to the next.  We get to see a little bit of combat, but not too much to make this love story a war movie, but enough to keep guys from dismissing it completely as a chick flick.

Dear John also has a side story line involving autism, one adult portrayal convincingly played by Richard Jenkins.  His story is touching, and his relationship with his son is a nice addition.  There is also another story involving a long-time neighbor whose young son is autistic, and very attached to Savannah.

Coin collecting, autism, special military forces, 9/11, lasagna, and even a Dear John Letter.  The movie was more than just a love story of a soldier and the girl he met on leave.  See Dear John at theaters, or if you miss it, return to buy the DVD at the best price when it is released.

#15 The Muppet Christmas Carol DVD

muppet_christmas_carolCharles Dickens' A Christmas Carol has been adapted for film many times (maybe I'll look that up?) and has a version currently in theaters as I write this.  I suppose we will see it when it comes to DVD, but for now I will happily watch The Muppet Christmas Carol from 1992.  Yes, it is the Muppets, the Puppets from Jim Henson, later purchased by Disney.  And it is a musical, like most Muppet movies.  But it does hold true to the original tale, and the actors all do a fine job of bring the tale to life for the whole family.

Michael Caine stars as  Ebenezer Scrooge, and Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie and the entire cast of the Muppets come together to retell the story of Charles Dickens' immortal classic A Christmas Carol. The ghost in here can actually be a little scary, so watch out for sensitive little ones that you may not be taking to see the new Christmas Carol version.

This movie has a nice twist with The Great Gonzo as Charles Dickens narrating the film himself.  So if you are looking for something fun and classic for Christmas, check out The Muppet Christmas Carol on DVD.

RETRACTION! The Christmas Card

This post is a retraction to The Christmas Card, which I recently posted on.

I just watched this movie, The Christmas Card, I hadn't seen it in quite awhile and since it is Christmas time I thought it would be fun to see again.  Well it was not as good as a I remember it to be.  The acting was just awful and actually my mom and I had more fun laughing at the actors and the script than having fun watching a good movie.

It was a good idea for a movie and entertaining, but it was corny and silly and funny when it shouldn't have been.

Keep in mind that this movie is well-loved and gets high marks from online reviewers and movie watchers.  But. . .we have realized it is the story-line involving the war, and finding true love through a Christmas card that is what everyone loves.  If you can get past the acting and bad script, you may love it too! :-)

This movie will always be special to me though, it was the last movie I watched with my grandpa.  He loved watching movies and he did enjoy this one.

#14 The Original Grinch 1966 – How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Grinch_posterDo you remember the original How the Grinch Stole Christmas?  If you have only seen the Jim Carey movie version do yourself a favor and get a hold of the the original Grinch that is actually based on the Dr. Seuss classic book, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

This version features the voice of Boris Karloff as the mean green Grinch, and he really does a great of being mean, greedy and just a bit on the creepy side.  So much so that as a small child I dreaded the night How the Grinch Stole Christmas would play on TV.  Being only a one time annual event meant my parents made it an event to watch this as a family.  I had to close my eyes when the Grinch slithered down (or up) the chimney in the house.  Boy, that huge evil grin!  Granted, most kids aren't as bothered by it as I was, but keep this in mind for the sensitive. :-)

Okay, so now I am over my fear of the Grinch and can remember what was sweet about the whole thing.  Just like the book, the movie had a great rhyme and reason to it.  And a certain sweetness to the Whos of Whoville that were a great contrast to the evil Grinch.

Do you remember. . .? Every Who down in Whoville liked Christmas a lot, but the Grinch, who lived just north of Whoville - did not. The Grinch hated Christmas - the whole Christmas season. Now, please don't ask why; no one quite knows the reason. It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight. Or it could be that his head wasn't screwed on just right. But I think that the most likely reason of all may have been that his heart was two sizes too small.

So why should we recommend the older version over the new fancy Hollywood version starring Jim Carey as the Grinch.  Well, this older version was enough.  The new one stretches into a full length movie what was wrapped up nicely in a half hour.

#13 A Charlie Brown Christmas Online

CBX_Blu-Ray_coverA Charlie Brown Christmas is one of most loved Christmas TV specials of all time, first seen in 1965.  One of a series of Peanuts TV specials, this wonderful animated short film is watched every Christmas by millions of families over the world.

Not wanting to ruin the magic of this treasure for you if you haven't seen it in years, I do want to encourage you to go down memory lane and smile for awhile at the true sweetness for this classic tale filled with many memorable moments.

When Charlie Brown is almost laughed out of the auditorium for bringing in a sad little Christmas tree, he asked the question if anyone knows the real reason for Christmas.  Little Linus does, and he goes on to recite a passage from the Bible telling of the birth of Jesus.  it is really amazing that Charles Schultz was able to include this speech.  It is likely that if this was produced today, the network would not have allowed this to be included.

Well, thank God (literally) that this special is so old, and you can still hear about the real reason for the season straight from the mouth of babes.

The original film was digitally remastered and released on DVD in 2008, but if you want to view it online for free, click on the link and head on over to HULU.com.  They air almost 22 of 25 minutes.  Not bad for free.  :-)   If you love it, like I know you will, you can get a copy for keeps.
