To Save A Life Movie DVD Review

Teen pregnancy, abortion, divorce, cutting, drugs, teen drinking, adoption, and suicide may sound like too many themes to cover in one film, but To Save a Life does admirable job of touching on them in a realistic story that happens everyday in America.

Not just public school teens, but also homeschooled teens, and Christian teens from your churche's youth group.  Did the film try to cover too much and did it fall into the trap of being another Christian film that suffers from low budget and bad acting?  No on both accounts!

The movie starts out with a bang, no pun intended, as a teen takes his own life, and in that moment changes his former best friend's life forever.  Sadly, most kids at the high school didn't even know who Roger was and didn't care much. Jake, now the school's star basketball player and a champion at beer pong, can't stop thinking about their life before he ditched Roger.  As his own family falls apart around him, Jake starts to ask questions and reaches out to an unlikely person.

I really don't want to give away the story here because I want you to enjoy it as I did, without any preconceived ideas.  There is so much to like about this movie, and hopefully the people who need to see it do.  I don't mean the hurting people, but the ones who ignore the hurting people around them, and walk on by the Rogers in their class and sitting behind them at church.  We need to reach out, and this film does an excellent job of showing how one person really can help save a life.

Buy the DVD and share it with your teens, friends and youth group.

#13 A Charlie Brown Christmas Online

CBX_Blu-Ray_coverA Charlie Brown Christmas is one of most loved Christmas TV specials of all time, first seen in 1965.  One of a series of Peanuts TV specials, this wonderful animated short film is watched every Christmas by millions of families over the world.

Not wanting to ruin the magic of this treasure for you if you haven't seen it in years, I do want to encourage you to go down memory lane and smile for awhile at the true sweetness for this classic tale filled with many memorable moments.

When Charlie Brown is almost laughed out of the auditorium for bringing in a sad little Christmas tree, he asked the question if anyone knows the real reason for Christmas.  Little Linus does, and he goes on to recite a passage from the Bible telling of the birth of Jesus.  it is really amazing that Charles Schultz was able to include this speech.  It is likely that if this was produced today, the network would not have allowed this to be included.

Well, thank God (literally) that this special is so old, and you can still hear about the real reason for the season straight from the mouth of babes.

The original film was digitally remastered and released on DVD in 2008, but if you want to view it online for free, click on the link and head on over to HULU.com.  They air almost 22 of 25 minutes.  Not bad for free.  :-)   If you love it, like I know you will, you can get a copy for keeps.

Faith Like Potatoes DVD – A True Story

Where There's Love There's Hope

Based on an inspiring true story, Faith Like Potatoes chronicles the true story of Angus Buchan, a farmer who moves his family to South Africa and then follows a series of insurmountable losses.

A Zambian farmer, Buchan leaves his farm in the midst of political unrest and racially charged land reclaims and travels south with his family to start a better life in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.  FAced with many hardships and personal trials, Angus's life quickly becomes consumed by anger, destruction, and fear.

What happens next is truly inspiring, as the farmer turns his life, family, and farm over to God and follows His direction for his life.  See the movie, and watch how God transforms this angry man and gives him faith.  God also uses him to inspire thousands to live their lives with faith in the Lord and to put their faith into action.  Angus and his wife Jill still operate their farm KwaZuLu Natal, run a children's home for abandoned and orphaned children, and help oversee a public school nearby.

Based on the life Angus Buchan, his book was adapted for the big screen by award-winning actor and director, Regardt van den Bergh, and weaves together the moving journey of a man who, like his potatoes, grows his faith, unseen until the harvest.

Ted Baehr said, "...Faith Like Potatoes... is like Fireproof on steroids."

Mercy Streets DVD

Going Legit has its price.

Mercy Streets is the story of estranged twin brothers, both played by David White, who are forced to switch lives.  Jeremiah is a preacher and John is a con man, and the switch brings about feelings of hate, guilt and resentment that will change their lives forever.

John is released from prison and looking for a fresh start.  Needing some capital, he agrees to pull one last job for his old mentor Rome (Eric Roberts).  John deliberate try to double cross Rome sends him on the run, invading the life of his identical twin Jeremiah, and turning his seemingly perfect life upside down.

Jeremiah is taken hostage by Rome and forced to participate in a a counterfeiting scam, however Rome plan suffers a glitch when Jeremiah escapes and comes face to face with his twin brother he thought was dead!  With no way out, the estranged brothers must turn to each other, and ultimately face the the love and forgiveness of God.

Mercy Streets is a Christian film, but fortunately does not suffer from many of the problems often seen in "Christian" movies; bad acting, low budget, bad script, and low quality special effects.  This movie was really good, and combined a subtle message of redemption, brotherly love, and the forgiveness of God.

The cast is recognizable and very good in this film, which is often lacking in movies produced by Christian filmmakers because of budget constraints.  The cast includes, Eric Roberts (Julia Roberts brother and an accomplished actor), Stacy Keach (from Mike Hammer and most recently Prison Break), David White (star of many Christian films including Hidden Secrets.), and Cynthia Watros as the girlfriend (best known as Libby on Lost).

If you have been looking for an entertaining crime action type film, free of any seriously objectionable content, I highly recommend this movie.

"Mercy Streets follows in the footsteps of storytellers like C.S. Lewis, Dorothy Sayers, Flannery O'Connor and John Grisham." - Chuck Colson

"A story that combines gritty reality  mixed with truthful emotions, genuine dialogue, and a killer soundtrack." - Holly McClure, Crosswalk.com

The Spitfire Grill DVD

To a town with no future, comes a girl with a past.

The Spitfire Grill is a 1996 movie that is worth seeing for the first time if you missed it.  The is a story of redemption, but not just the redemption of the main character, but of many people and even the town itself.   Overall, the film deals with many powerful themes including compassion, hatred, independence, the economic problems of small towns, and even the plight of Vietnam War veterans.

Percy Talbott decides to make Gilead, Maine, her new home one day.  Here she gets a second chance at the towns Spitfire Grill, owned by the feisty Hannah Ferfuson, played by the Academy Award winner Ellen Burstyn.

Turns out Percy has just served five years for manslaughter and she has arrived in the town to try and start her life over again.  The Spitfire Grill gives her that fresh start, but the town's suspicious folk can't stop worrying about Percy's past.

Hannah has her own past to deal with and she needs a new owner for her grill.  She decides to run an essay contest to find the new owner and the town of Gilead has a hard time with her plan.  It is a bit of a tear jerker, and Elliot and Burnstyn are very good, as are all the actors who support them.

One can't say too much about this move without giving away the ending, but there are some surprises, action, and heart rendering moments in this film.  It is just one of those movies you should see.  The New England landscape is gorgeous, and lends to the whole idea of a fresh start for everyone who visits The Spitfire Grill.

The film was the winner of the 1996 Sundance Film Festival.

Interesting movie trivia:  The idea for the film was conceived by Roger M. Courts, long-time Director and CEO of Sacred Heart League, Inc., a Catholic nonprofit fund raising and communications organization.  They read over 200 scripts, looking for one that had good story-telling and Judeo-Christian values.  Profits from the sale of the movie were used to build a kindergarten through eighth grade school for 450 children in Southaven, Mississippi, located 10 miles from the Sacred Heart League headquarters in Walls. The school's cafeteria is named "The Spitfire Grill."

Feature Films for Family DVDs

Feature Films for Families has been a wonderful find for many families looking for quality, wholesome movies, virtually free of gratuitous violence, bad language, and nudity.  Each movie strives to include a subtle moral message or strong family value that most good mothers and fathers would be happy to impart on their children.

Not Christian movies, but certainly high on moral values, and low on inappropriate content, these are very popular with homeschoolers, and other families who are trying to stay away from objectionable content.

Feature Films for Families movies vary in quality of acting and scripts, but for the most part are pretty good and entertaining.  They carry some big studio movies that they somehow got the rights to edit for content and you may recognize some of their titles from your childhood. You know, those great after school special and Wonderworks movies?  Well, they have some of those too.  They also sell many movies based of great children's books, such as Caddie Woodlawn, Jacob have I Loved, Summer of the Monkeys and Girl of the Limberlost.

Feature Films for Families are constantly producing new movies for all ages, with many aimed at older kids and  teens.  Plus, they bring back old favorites for new generations to enjoy.  They also make it a point to carry movies about culteral diversity, and many historical fiction movies that allow you to bring history alive for your kids.

Now that I think about it, some of my family's favorite movies over the years have come from FFF or they now carry them .  Look for some of these titles:

  • Borrowed hearts
  • Summer of the Monkeys
  • Christy
  • Mickey
  • Rigoletto
  • The Christmas Shoes (starring Rob Lowe)
  • The Sandy Bottom Orchestra
  • Brother Future
  • and many more. . .

Hometown Legend

40169267From Jerry B. Jenkins, author of The Left Behind Series

The inspiring story of a small to town's fight for survival.  The town's high school is about to close down, and the once champion football team hasn't had a winning season in twelve years.  That was when an unthinkable tradgedy struck and the football coach retired and left town.

When the legendary football coach returns for one final season he brings much needed hope to the Crusaders and the whole town.  This includes the rebellious drifter who comes to town to play football and win the coveted town scholarship, which is the only ticket to college for many of the town's players.  The assistant coach's daughter not only believes in him, but she seems to have enough faith for the whole town.

Hometwon Legend is a great film that entire families can enjoy together, especially teens on up, which will like the high school sports theme.  Everyone will enjoy the story of a small town that has one more chance and takes it.  Soundtrack features music by Christian artist, Dan Haseltine of Jars of Clay.  The cast includes Terry O'Quinn and Lacey Chabert.

The movie starts with a girl burying a newspaper clip and asking God to show up and show off.  Get this movie and see what happens next. . .

Soundtrack by Dan Haseltine of Jars of Clay!

“Entertaining in the tradition of Hoosiers and Remember The Titans.”

Fireproof

Fireproof

Never Leave Your Partner Behind. . .

fireproofThis inspirational movie is not only heartwarming, but action packed and has surprising moments of humor.  Kirk Cameron really gives a very believable performance as a fire captain who is a hero in his community, but facing divorce at home.

The writing was better than I thought it would be, with believable dialogue, interesting characters, and many exceptional scenes that I will remember for a long time.  I was also surprised that the fire sequences were pretty good, not the cheap special affects I am used to from Christian films that usually suffer from low budgetitis.

There are also many humorous moments between the firemen and new recruits at the firehouse, but be forewarned:  This is not a movie about a Firehouse and its wonderful heroic men who fight amazing special effects fires by day, and hang out and show their great camaraderie by drinking beers all night.  If you are looking for that, you may want to see Ladder 49.

Not wanting to give away too much of the plot of Fireproof,  I will say that I was glad to see a tough subject dealt with, without the need of any inappropriate scenes, language, or detail that a family could not watch together.  That said, the movie is not for young kids, as it really would go over their heads, but teens on up will enjoy the movie and come away with a lot of practical advice for those entering into a relationship for the first time, newlyweds, or married couples who need to remember that their partner and marriage is important enough to fight for.  The whole 40 day Love Dare is really interesting and practical, and something all married couples can benefit from seeing played out in the film.

I have to admit, I loved this movie, seeing it first in the theater with my husband, and later on DVD with my teens.  All of us really enjoyed it, and being a family that watches many Christian films, we were impressed with this story of faith and forgiveness.

I will admit that my positive review is also taking into account the low budget, volunteer cast and crew, and faith based message that I strongly agree with.
