4. Miracle on 34th Street – Thanksgiving Movie List

4. Miracle on 34th Street

Whether you enjoy the original 1947 version of this tale starring Natalie Wood as the little girl who doesn't believe in Santa, or the modernized version with Mara Wilson as the disbelieving little girl, both movies include the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.  And if you are skeptical of remakes, you should know that the newer version does stick close to the original story.

When the actor hired to play Santa in the annual Macy's parade is found to be drunk, a replacement is needed quick.  The newly hired man seems perfect for the job and there is a good reason for that:  he claims he is in fact the real Kris Kringle.  His sanity is questioned and put on trial, even as those around him begin to notice that there is indeed something special about this store Santa.

The 1994 version also stars Elizabeth Perkins, Dylan McDermott, and Richard Attenborough as Santa.  Just click on the link and search for your favorite, old or new, both movies are enjoyable whether you believe in Santa or not. :-)

#15 The Muppet Christmas Carol DVD

muppet_christmas_carolCharles Dickens' A Christmas Carol has been adapted for film many times (maybe I'll look that up?) and has a version currently in theaters as I write this.  I suppose we will see it when it comes to DVD, but for now I will happily watch The Muppet Christmas Carol from 1992.  Yes, it is the Muppets, the Puppets from Jim Henson, later purchased by Disney.  And it is a musical, like most Muppet movies.  But it does hold true to the original tale, and the actors all do a fine job of bring the tale to life for the whole family.

Michael Caine stars as  Ebenezer Scrooge, and Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie and the entire cast of the Muppets come together to retell the story of Charles Dickens' immortal classic A Christmas Carol. The ghost in here can actually be a little scary, so watch out for sensitive little ones that you may not be taking to see the new Christmas Carol version.

This movie has a nice twist with The Great Gonzo as Charles Dickens narrating the film himself.  So if you are looking for something fun and classic for Christmas, check out The Muppet Christmas Carol on DVD.

RETRACTION! The Christmas Card

This post is a retraction to The Christmas Card, which I recently posted on.

I just watched this movie, The Christmas Card, I hadn't seen it in quite awhile and since it is Christmas time I thought it would be fun to see again.  Well it was not as good as a I remember it to be.  The acting was just awful and actually my mom and I had more fun laughing at the actors and the script than having fun watching a good movie.

It was a good idea for a movie and entertaining, but it was corny and silly and funny when it shouldn't have been.

Keep in mind that this movie is well-loved and gets high marks from online reviewers and movie watchers.  But. . .we have realized it is the story-line involving the war, and finding true love through a Christmas card that is what everyone loves.  If you can get past the acting and bad script, you may love it too! :-)

This movie will always be special to me though, it was the last movie I watched with my grandpa.  He loved watching movies and he did enjoy this one.

#14 The Original Grinch 1966 – How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Grinch_posterDo you remember the original How the Grinch Stole Christmas?  If you have only seen the Jim Carey movie version do yourself a favor and get a hold of the the original Grinch that is actually based on the Dr. Seuss classic book, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

This version features the voice of Boris Karloff as the mean green Grinch, and he really does a great of being mean, greedy and just a bit on the creepy side.  So much so that as a small child I dreaded the night How the Grinch Stole Christmas would play on TV.  Being only a one time annual event meant my parents made it an event to watch this as a family.  I had to close my eyes when the Grinch slithered down (or up) the chimney in the house.  Boy, that huge evil grin!  Granted, most kids aren't as bothered by it as I was, but keep this in mind for the sensitive. :-)

Okay, so now I am over my fear of the Grinch and can remember what was sweet about the whole thing.  Just like the book, the movie had a great rhyme and reason to it.  And a certain sweetness to the Whos of Whoville that were a great contrast to the evil Grinch.

Do you remember. . .? Every Who down in Whoville liked Christmas a lot, but the Grinch, who lived just north of Whoville - did not. The Grinch hated Christmas - the whole Christmas season. Now, please don't ask why; no one quite knows the reason. It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight. Or it could be that his head wasn't screwed on just right. But I think that the most likely reason of all may have been that his heart was two sizes too small.

So why should we recommend the older version over the new fancy Hollywood version starring Jim Carey as the Grinch.  Well, this older version was enough.  The new one stretches into a full length movie what was wrapped up nicely in a half hour.

#13 A Charlie Brown Christmas Online

CBX_Blu-Ray_coverA Charlie Brown Christmas is one of most loved Christmas TV specials of all time, first seen in 1965.  One of a series of Peanuts TV specials, this wonderful animated short film is watched every Christmas by millions of families over the world.

Not wanting to ruin the magic of this treasure for you if you haven't seen it in years, I do want to encourage you to go down memory lane and smile for awhile at the true sweetness for this classic tale filled with many memorable moments.

When Charlie Brown is almost laughed out of the auditorium for bringing in a sad little Christmas tree, he asked the question if anyone knows the real reason for Christmas.  Little Linus does, and he goes on to recite a passage from the Bible telling of the birth of Jesus.  it is really amazing that Charles Schultz was able to include this speech.  It is likely that if this was produced today, the network would not have allowed this to be included.

Well, thank God (literally) that this special is so old, and you can still hear about the real reason for the season straight from the mouth of babes.

The original film was digitally remastered and released on DVD in 2008, but if you want to view it online for free, click on the link and head on over to HULU.com.  They air almost 22 of 25 minutes.  Not bad for free.  :-)   If you love it, like I know you will, you can get a copy for keeps.

#11 The Homecoming – A Christmas Story (The Waltons)

The Waltons are a rural American family during the Depression, preparing to celebrate Christmas together.  Though times are tough, this deeply moving tale of of love, hope and sharing first introduced America to "The Waltons" and inspired one of the longest running, and most popular family dramas on Television.

Based on Earl Hamner's autobiographical writings, this series was about a 1930's mountain clan trying to eek out a living during the Depression.   This movie was a little harder edged than the subsequent TV series, but the love and faith of the family still shines through.

You may remember watching this as a child on TV; it first aired in December of 1971, with all the children in the movie reprising their roles for the long-running series, several of the adults were recast.

The most noticeable difference being Patricia Neal playing the part of Livvy Walton, which was later played a bit softer by Michael Learned.  The family seemed a bit more on edge in this Holiday special as they wait for John to return home for Christmas.  There are some very memorable scenes in this movie, some inspiring, and some a bit painful, like watching Elizabeth receive her charity doll which is broken.  The children bicker and they did in The Waltons, so don't let it surprise you.

The beautiful mountain scenery adds to the Christmas spirit of the movie.

Starring:

Patricia Neal

Richard Thomas

Edgar Bergen

Ellen Corby

Andrew Duggan

Taking place during the height of The Great Depression, The Homecoming is wonderful family entertainment.  They don't make movies like this anymore. :-)

#10 Miracle on 34th Street (1994)

miracle on 34th streetThis remake of the heartwarming Christmas classic captures all the joy and wonder of the original version.  A young girl, who has been raised not to believe in fairy tales and Santa Claus, meets a department store Santa Claus who claims that he is the real Kris Kringle.  Her mother of course, insists that it can't be true, that Kris is just a nice old man.  But soon things start happening that may make them both change their minds and make them believe in the magic of Christmas once again.

This was a wonderful movie. I think the young Mara Wilson may have made the movie for me, she was cute and funny and just a joy to watch.  Actually all of the actors in this movie were very good.  This is a great Christmas movie for the whole family.

Starring:

  • Elizabeth Perkins
  • Dylan McDermott
  • Richard Attenborough
  • Mara Wilson

Quotes from the movie:

Kris Kringle: You think I'm a fraud, don't you?
Dorey Walker: Fraud is a bit too strong of a word.
Kris Kringle: But you don't believe in me.
Dorey Walker: I believe that Christmas is for children.
Kris Kringle: Well your daughter doesn't believe in me, either.
Dorey Walker: I don't think that there's any harm in not believing in a figure that many do acknowledge to be a fiction.
Kris Kringle: Oh, but there is. I'm not just a whimsical figure who wears a charming suit and affects a jolly demeanor. You know, I... I... I'm a symbol. I'm a symbol of the human ability to be able to suppress the selfish and hateful tendencies that rule the major part of our lives. If... you can't believe, if you can't accept anything on faith, then you're doomed for a life dominated by doubt.

IMDb.com voters gave this movie a 6/10  I give this movie a 8/10

#9 A Christmas Visitor

In a small town of New Chatham, Christmas is approaching the Boyajian family.  But George, Carol and their daughter Jean, have lost their desire to celebrate.  Immersed in grief from their sons death on Christmas Eve 1991 in the Persian Gulf War, George and Carol have forgone the familiar comfort and pleasures of the holidays.  But this year George is determined to bring his family back together again.  This, however, comes true in ways no one ever could have imagined.

George brings home a young man named Matthew, a hitchhiker presumably without a place to stay.  He accepts the invitation to stay the night at the Boyajian's house and also agrees a well intentioned charade: to pretend, for Carol and Jean's sake, that he knew their beloved son in the war.  But once inside the warmth of their home; Matthew has a few surprises in store for all of them - ones that will renew their faith in each other and the wonderful miracles of Christmas.

Actors include:

  • Meridith Baxter
  • William Devane
  • Reagan Pasternak
  • Dean McDermott
  • Aaron Ashmore

This movie was originally aired on the Hallmark Channel.  It was very heart warming and you may even shed a tear or two at the end.  The acting was not the best but about average for a "hallmark movie" ;)
