Harry Connick Jr. Movies and DVD

A Harry Connick Jr. movie list isn't complete without some new, some old, and some you may never have heard of.  I just watched the movie New In Town, starring Harry Connick Jr. and Rene Zellweger.  I really liked the movie, sort of a romantic comedy, with the whole fish out of water story.

Harry Connick Jr.  is best known for his piano playing and baritone voice, getting his first big break doing the music for the soundtrack of When Harry Met Sally.  This led to movie roles, his first being being Will Smith's sidekick in Independence Day.

Mickey

Did You Hear About The Morgans? DVD

Did You Hear About the Morgans? was about as predictable as they come.  After seeing the trailer showing a married couple witnessing a murder that requires them to enter the witness protection program, I pretty much felt like I had seen the movie.  Well, I did spring for this at the local dollar theater, because I knew it would be funny, regardless.  It was.

Hugh Grant is funny in his normal understated way.  His wife and him are separated and he wants her back.  His wife seems to still love him, but is not sure she can live with him.  Entering the witness protection program and being sent to the middle-of-nowhere, Wyoming gives them time to try and patch things up.

Sam Elliot and Mary Steenburgen play the husband and wife team who protect the Morgans from the bad guys, the bears, and each other.  All in all, it was one of those movies that was not hysterical, but really had us smiling and laughing much of the time.  I don't think I will spoil things to tell you that there is a happy ending.

Did You Hear About the Morgans? is more a fish-out-of-water tale, than a murder mystery so don't get too worked up about the witness protection sub-plot. It was an interesting way to get the separated Morgans to spend a little time together . . .

Note to self: If I witness a murder, immediately dye my hair, lose 50 pounds, and start wearing tons of make-up.  The killer will never recognize me.

Baby Boom DVD Diane Keaton

Diane Keaton stars in this very sweet and funny movie about a high powered career woman who inherits a baby.  Yes, she was dreaming of a big wad of cash, an estate home, family heirloom. . . but when she went to the airport to pick up her inheritance after the death of a relative she barely remembers, she is quite shocked to find her inheritance is none other than her cousin's baby girl.

J.C. Wiatt thinks she has it all together.  She is beautiful, talented, and on her way to the top of the career ladder.  She has no plans for a baby, but she does get attached to the idea of keeping adorable Elizabeth, and thinks she can keep working her busy schedule and not miss a beat.  She even assures her boss that this will not affect her work.  Of course, as any mom knows, this is impossible to do without help, support, or 24 hour daycare.

She tries to do it all and ends up having to choose between her career or Elizabeth.  I know the DVD gives away most of the plot anyway, so I will tell you that there are many surprises in store as J.C. buys an old farm to settle down on has some hysterical situations dealing with her money pit.  But being a business woman and entrepreneur at heart, J.C. is able to turn everything around and be a mom to her inherited baby and still rise to the top in business. And she even finds love again.

Finding Neverland DVD James M. Barrie

This is the magical tale of one of the greatest storytellers in history, and the people in his life who inspired his masterwork, Peter Pan!

The film Neverland stars Johnnie Depp as the well-known playwright, and Kate Winslet, Dustin Hoffman, and Julie Christie star as the important people in his life.

When James M. Barrie is coming off from having his latest play flop, he has many people doubting his future. By chance he meets a young widow played by Winslet, and her four adventurous boys. As their friendship grows, Barrie's imagination is ignited, and he is able to go on to produce his greatest work, Peter Pan!

The film stays true, keeping the relationship between Barrie and Sylvia platonic, even though real life accounts state that Sylvia's husband was still alive when the events in the story take place.   Also, Barrie was a very successful playwright before the classic play Peter Pan! or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up was ever produced.  As in many movies based on real life, directors and screenwriters often take liberties to make a story flow, cut down on characters, present a lifetime in 2 hours. . .

The winner of many prestigious awards, including “The Best Family Film of the Year,” by The Critic's Choice Awards, Finding Neverland has been hailed as one of the best films of the year it was released, 2004.

Confessions of a Shopaholic DVD

Confessions of a Shopaholic stars Isla Fisher as a recent graduate who dreams of a job writing about high fashion for a top magazine in New York.  The shopaholic with a love affair with her credit cards ends up landing a job writing a personal finance column.  Her column, The Green Scarf Girl, becomes a big hit, even though her personal finances are are a disaster.

Becky Bloomwood falls for her boss, Hugh Dancy, and ends up creating some hilarious situations as she tries to keep her boss in the dark about her personal financial crisis, while her personal finance column becomes the hit of the magazine industry.

Confessions of a Shopaholic is an adorable feel-good romantic comedy that will have you laughing out loud as Becky deals with creditors hounding her, canceled credit cards, a cute new boss, and her rising star status as the writer of the popular new hip personal finance column, The Green Scarf Girl.

The movie has a great cast of comedic actors including:

The movie is based on the book by Sophi Kinsella, and I have heard that the book and movie are very different, so don't watch this expecting it to be the same story.  I can't think of many movies that follow the book closely anyway, so just buy the Confessions of a Shopaholic DVD to see a very funny, sweet romantic comedy, that is pretty clean too.

Sleepless In Seattle

sleeplessSam Baldwin (TOM HANKS) is a widowed father, who, thanks to his young son becomes the guest on a radio talk show.  He is an instant hit with all the female listeners, who deluge his Seattle home with letters of comfort.  Meanwhile, inspired by Sam's story and by classic hollywood romance, writer Annie Reed (MEG RYAN) becomes convinced that it is her destiny to meet Sam.  There is only 2 problems:  Annie is engaged to someone else, and Sam doesn't know they are meant for each other.

This is a really funny and cute movie.  The acting is so good, you forget you're watching a movie.  Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are so good together, they seem like they are really in love.   It's probably more for the female audiences, but some guys might like it. ;)
