#6 Pieces of April – Thanksgiving Movie List

Pieces of April is the story of April inviting her family over to her apartment for Thanksgiving.  Not as simple as it may sound.  You see, April is the back sheep of the family, her mom is dying, and most of the rest of the family is estranged.

This story really is about a real family, with real problems, and complex situations.  The story is also about Thanksgiving, and April's family does a good job of remembering the meaning of the day and tries to put their feelings aside, and get along.

Not a bad idea for us to follow.  April tells them the story of a Thanksgiving when everyone knew they needed each other . . .

Pieces of April is about family, and needing each other, forgiveness, and love.  A little strange, but sweet too.  Kind of like my family. :-)

Released in 2003, Pieces of April stars Katie Holmes in the lead, and  Derek Luke, Oliver Platt, and Patricia Clarkson.

#5. A Walton Thanksgiving Reunion – Thanksgiving Movie List

A Walton Thanksgiving Reunion marks the first time the original cast members have been together since  Richard Thomas and Michael Learned left the TV series.  Set 20 years after the series finale, the year is 1963 and the family is getting together to celebrate Thanksgiving and are all reflecting on how the assassination of President Kennedy has affected them.

There are some modern touches that really weren't in the original series so many felt this special wasn't true to the Waltons series.  Still, an enjoyable movie, with the return of John Boy and Olivia.  There are also many cameos from favorite characters of the show, which make this a great show to watch and recall the series with family.

Starring:  Richard Waite, Michael Learned, Richard Thomas, Ellen Korby, and Judy Norton-Taylor.

First aired in 1993, and available in a wonderful collection of DVDs of all the movie specials made after the series was cancelled.

4. Miracle on 34th Street – Thanksgiving Movie List

4. Miracle on 34th Street

Whether you enjoy the original 1947 version of this tale starring Natalie Wood as the little girl who doesn't believe in Santa, or the modernized version with Mara Wilson as the disbelieving little girl, both movies include the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.  And if you are skeptical of remakes, you should know that the newer version does stick close to the original story.

When the actor hired to play Santa in the annual Macy's parade is found to be drunk, a replacement is needed quick.  The newly hired man seems perfect for the job and there is a good reason for that:  he claims he is in fact the real Kris Kringle.  His sanity is questioned and put on trial, even as those around him begin to notice that there is indeed something special about this store Santa.

The 1994 version also stars Elizabeth Perkins, Dylan McDermott, and Richard Attenborough as Santa.  Just click on the link and search for your favorite, old or new, both movies are enjoyable whether you believe in Santa or not. :-)

#3 An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving – Thanksgiving Movie List

The prequel to this year's An Old Fashioned Christmas, this Hallmark movie is based on the story by Louisa May Alcott book of the same title.  An Old Fashioned Thanksgiving is a good family movie that reminds us to be thankful for what we have and for our loved ones, and to forgive others as we have been forgiven also.

Set in New Hampshire, shortly after the Civil War, it follows the story of a young widow who is trying to rear her three children in spite of the hardships she is facing.  It is centered around the Thanksgiving holiday and one teenager who tries to save her struggling family from financial ruin by contacting an unknown grandmother.

Strong performances by Jacqueline Bissett and Helena Joy, this is considered one of the better Hallmark movies by many critics, with good acting, and some depth to the story and its characters.

Be sure to catch the premier of the sequel, An Old Fashioned Christmas, which is set to air on the Hallmark channel, Saturday, December 11, 2010.

#2 A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving – Thanksgiving Movie List

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, an Emmy-Award winning cartoon, first aired on TV in 1973.  One of those heart-warming holiday specials that can be enjoyed year after year by the whole family.

Although Charlie Brown has been invited to his grandmother's house for Thanksgiving, he gets roped into having the gang over when Peppermint Patty invites herself and her friends to Chuck's house for the traditional feast.  Charlie Brown, with the help of his friends Linus and Snoopy, pulls together a last minute supper for their friends.  Along the way they all learn some lessons about the true meaning of Thanksgiving.

This special includes a nice musical score by Vince Guaraldi.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Remastered Deluxe Edition also includes "The Mayflower Voyages" the educational special from the Peanuts gang.

As a child, my holidays weren't complete without watching a Peanut's Holiday special on TV.  Today's kids still enjoy them on DVD, and parents can relive the memories.  :-)

Thanksgiving Movies – Top Ten Thanksgiving Movie List #1 Avalon

Thanksgiving Day movies are a perfect way for the family to relax together after a huge Thanksgiving meal, when everyone is too stuffed to do anything else.  Most movies on this Thanksgiving movie list are heartwarming family films, and if the family is sitting in front of the TV anyway, a Thanksgiving themed movie would be a nice way to spend the time before the gang is up for leftovers and pumpkin pie.

So here is the first of  MovieSister's Top Ten List of movies to watch on Thanksgiving Day and through the whole weekend:

1.  Avalon

A wonderful nostalgic portrait of a Polish Jewish immigrant family, following their dreams by coming to America, to a place called Avalon.  Each member of the family works to make enough money to send for the next sibling.  We follow their lives from poverty through prosperity as the Krichinksy family sees the future in the thing called television.  Much of the movie centers around Thanksgiving, and though Avalon might not be for everyone, if you enjoy stories about family and The American Dream, be sure to get a copy of Avalon for your DVD collection.

Starring a young Elijah Wood, the movie is beautifully acted by a superb cast including Aidan Quinn, Elizabeth Perkins, Armin Mueller-Stahl, and Kevin Pollak.   Written and directed by Barry Levinson, a fictionalized story of his life, is better known for such movies as Rain Man, Bugsy, and Good-Morning Vietnam.
