After being fired from his own band, down and out Rock star Dewey Finn, hilariously played by Jack Black, picks up the phone and accepts a substitute teaching job at a prestigious elementary school. One problem: He's not a teacher, and the school was calling for his roommate. That doesn't stop Dewey Finn (Jack Black) from impersonating a teacher in order to get the rent money he so desperately needs to save himself from being kicked out of his apartment.
Come to find out, his little class of fifth graders is full of musical prodigies, even if they are playing in a classical orchestra, and Dewey decides that teaching Rock "n"Roll and winning "The Battle of the Bands" contest is more important than teaching math.
The class of kids is willing to ditch lessons, but Dewey finds himself needing to keep his deception from the principal of the school (Joan Cusack), and his roommate Ned, who he is impersonating.
I am afraid to admit (and usually don't), but this is one of my favorite movies of all times. It is so full of laugh out loud hysterical lines and situations that it is the movie to watch when you need a good laugh and just want to escape and have fun for two hours.
The cast of Rock N Roll wannabes includes a quite funny performance by a young Miranda Cosgrove, from the popular iCarly show. Joan Cusack is perfect as the uptight principle, and will have you laughing out loud throughout the film. Mike White, writer of the screenplay, plays the best friend/roommate who Dewey impersonates. His girlfriend is played by Sarah Silverman, and though I am not a fan of her, she does a decent job as the obnoxious girlfriend who wants Dewey out of the apartment and out of their lives. (I would have nixed the student who comes across as a future transvestite and found him stupid and not needed at all. Luckily his lines are few. and tame. Let's just say he is much more interested in the fashion of the band than what the band will sing on stage.)
I could go on and on, but you really just need to see this movie. I recommend buying a copy, because this is one you will want to see again. It just gets funnier. Many reviewers have said this was the funniest movie they saw in 2003, and I think it still sits near the top of all time funny films.
Rated PG-13 for some "mild expletives," it is pretty tame by today's standards. A couple comments had me using the remote when my teens were younger, so enjoy it yourself first if you screen movies like I do. No nudity or bedroom scenes, unless you count Jack Black sprawled out shirtless on the floor of his apartment bedroom. (I don't)
